Local produce from Wild River Farms

Wild River Farms

We all know how important it is to eat your vegetables! They are naturally filled with vitamins that your body needs, plus they are delicious! One way to get your daily intake could be to take a look at our local produce providers in the Austin area.

My boyfriend just so happens to work at one of these places. He is a Horticulturalist that works at a farm called Wild River Farms. It’s located about 30 miles West of Austin in Spicewood, Texas.

The great thing about dating a horticulturalist (besides his dashing good looks) is that I get to see firsthand where some of my food comes from and how it is grown. Wild River Farms uses a retractable roof greenhouse that accommodates a large variety of lettuce, Kale, Arugula and Basil. The greenhouse uses a system in which these are grown hydroponically- a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions, in water, without soil that conserves water and also contributes to the preservation of natural land. All of the veggies and fruits grown there are non GMO (not genetically modified) and pesticide/ herbicide-free. So you can feel better about what you are putting in your body!

Wild River Farms is also home to a large apple orchard, and over 2,000 blueberry plants! So you can get some of that sweet along with your savory. Blueberries are rich in antioxidants and high in fiber, which lowers your cholesterol, regulates your digestive system, and keep your heart healthy! Fruits and Veggies are packed with Vitamins such as A and C.  Both Vitamins protect your mouth from cell damage and bacterial infection, speed up the healing process and reparative influence on the soft tissues of the oral cavities, and support cell growth throughout the entire body.

You can find products from Wild River Farms at your local Central Market(statewide) or Wheatsville.  Some local restaurants such as Jack Allen’s kitchen (in Oak Hill) and Austin Golf Club also feature some of Wild Rivers’ delicious produce!
