It seems like everyone is trying tooth-whitening products to brighten their smile. Are you one of them? There are many products you can try at home: white strips, paint-on gels, brightening toothpastes or mouthwashes.
According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, tooth whitening is the No. 1 cosmetic service requested of dentists. And nationally, we spend more than $1 billion a year on over-the-counter tooth-bleaching products.
But can whitening treatments turn into too much of a good thing? It’s entirely possible. Just as people become obsessed with plastic surgery, or working out constantly to achieve super fitness, some people become “addicted” to tooth whitening.
At 12 Oaks Dental, Dr. Marc Worob and Dr. Elyse Cronin Barron offer the Ultradent Opalescence tooth whitening system. Opalescence is similar to other in-office whitening treatments in that it uses a special bleaching gel applied to the teeth. It’s unique in that it actually strengthens the enamel of your teeth, reducing the risk of decay. If you’d prefer to whiten your teeth at home, we can give you prescription strength whitening trays to use at your convenience. In-office Opalescence will whiten your teeth in about an hour. Home whitening can take several weeks to achieve the effect you want.
Not all smiles will be significantly improved with tooth-whitening, however. If your teeth are very badly stained or damaged, you may want to consider dental bonding or porcelain veneers for permanent improvements. It’s a fact of life that we’re often judged by our appearance. A good smile is important for your self-confidence and well being.
