Do you remember the old saying that “you are what you eat?” As it turns out, that may not be far from the truth. Recent studies have shown that food sensitivities impact millions and millions of people around the world, and are often the cause of symptoms ranging from headaches to intestinal issues to skin rashes and more. At 12 Oaks Dental, our goal is not only the oral health of our patient family, but the overall health wellness of each individual as well, which is why we are pleased to offer FIT tests (Food Intolerance Testing) as one of the many services we provide to our patients from throughout the Austin, TX, area.
Symptoms of Food Sensitivities
The list of symptoms related to food sensitivities is almost as long as the list of foods that could be culprits. We’ve already mentioned a few common symptoms, such as headaches, rashes and digestive upset. But food allergies can cause other symptoms as well, including fatigue, arthritic pain, and even long-range serious issues such as some forms of cancer and infertility. Often, symptoms related to food sensitivities don’t occur right after eating. In fact, they can appear as long as 72 hours after ingesting the food, which is why food allergies and sensitivities are so hard to pinpoint without a clinical test.
What You Should Know about the FIT Test
Our FIT test measures sensitivities to 132 different foods and additives. The procedure begins with taking a small blood sample from the patient. That sample is then used to determine which foods and/or additives might be causing an allergic reaction in the patient. Based on the results of the FIT test, the patient can then begin to eliminate the problem food or substance from his or her diet which, after a period of time, greatly reduces the symptoms that the patient is experiencing.
