The 12 Oaks Dental Team walks to help end Alzheimer’s Disease
This year The Walk to End Alzheimer’s looked a little different than it did when we participated in 2019, as do most things in 2020. This year the walk was “everywhere”. Meaning, everyone was encouraged the walk in their own neighborhoods, school track, or even the treadmill.
On 09/26/2020 the 12 Oaks Dental team met up at the Great Hills Trail to walk.
Why is your dentist walking for Alzheimer’s? Well, our mission is to keep our patients healthy. Completely healthy. For us, that starts with a healthy mouth. Evidence proves the link between gum disease and Alzheimer’s disease. Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is caused by large amounts of bad bacteria hiding in deep pockets around the teeth. Researchers found that in 96% of the patients tested, the same bad bacteria was present in the brain tissue of the Alzheimer’s patient. To read more about that study, click here.
With the help of Oral DNA, we are able to test our patients saliva for this bad bacteria. It is a quick and easy test that could help, and has helped, so many of our patients get and stay healthy. If interested, please call or talk with your dental hygienist at your next oral wellness visit.
So we walked…
It was a beautiful day and a great trail. Even some of the 12 Oaks Dental team’s kids joined in to raise awareness!
In the end, with the help of our unique patients, team, and a matched donation from Dr. Worob and Dr. Barron, we were able to raise $820 for the Alzheimer’s foundation of Austin. Take a peek at our team page here!
Each one of these flowers represents a person that donated to our team. We have AMAZING patients! We heard so many stories of families affected by this terrible disease. We walked for them. For the mothers, father, and countless loved ones that endured this terrible disease.
We walk for the first survivor!
